Module I
Mechanism of light propagation in fibres - different types of fibres - single mode, step index and graded index fibres. Losses in fibre - attenuation, absorption, scattering and radiation losses. Dispersion in fibres. Basic fibre measurements : Attenuation, numerical aperture, dispersion and refractive index profile, measurement using OTDR.

Module II
Interference effects and their applications - principle of interferometry, inteferometers, Michelson's , Mach zender, Fabri - Perot and speckle pattern interferometers.
Diffraction effects and their applications : diffraction effect, Diffraction grating and moire interferometry. Holography : Principle, recording, reconstruction and classification of holograms.
Applications of holography in industry.

Module III
Introduction to optical fibre sensors. Single mode fibre sensor for current measurement, fibre optic pressure sensors, optical fibre flow meter, fluro - optic temperature sensors, fluid level detection, displacement sensors, Measurement of refractive index of liquids.

Question Paper: -
The Question paper will consist of two parts. Part 1 is to cover entire syllabus, and carries 40 marks. This will contain 10 compulsory questions of 4 marks each. Part II is to cover 3 modules, and carries 60 marks. There will be 3 questions from each module (10 marks each) out of which 2 are to be answered.
