Module I
Classification of light wave systems -Linear systems : Intensity Modulated Direct Detection (IMDD) and Coherent systems, Comparison of linear systems. Non -linear systems. Soliton based communication systems. All optical (photonic) systems.
Module II
Need for all optical (photonic) systems. Components of all optical communications and networking. Photonic switches-principle of optical bistability and its applications. Optical amplifiers (OAs). Design of Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifiers, Power gain, Signal gain, Optimum fiber length , Fiber Raman Amplifiers (FRAs), Fiber Brillouin Amplifiers (FBAs). Praseodymium Doped Fiber Amplifiers (PDFAs) and Semiconductor Laser Amplifier (SLAs). A study of comparison of OAs.
Module III
Design aspects of Soliton based photonic communication systems. Soliton links using lumped EDFA repeaters. Problems associated with soliton amplification by EDFAs. Stability of soliton pulses. Causes of error in soliton links. Bit error rate analysis. Effect of amplifier spacing, Bit rate and transmission distance on BER performance.

Question paper: -
Question paper shall consist of two parts. Part 1 is to cover entire syllabus. And compulsory for 40 marks. This may contain 10 questions of 4 marks each. Part II is to cover 3 modules. There can be 3 questions from each module (10 marks each) out of which 2 are to be answered. |
